The Weather Watch program directly contributes to ESB Networks’ purpose of connecting a clean electric future.

The Weather Watch program directly contributes to ESB Networks’ purpose of connecting a clean electric future. By educating young people about the relationship between weather and renewable energy generation, the program fosters a greater understanding of sustainable energy practices. This empowers future generations to make informed decisions and actively participate in the transition towards a cleaner energy system. The program helps students understand how weather patterns influence the availability of renewable energy sources like wind and solar, which is crucial for optimizing the integration of these sources into the electricity grid.

Our Purpose – Connecting a clean electric future together

  • At ESB Networks, we make sure electricity reaches the homes and businesses of over 2.5 million customers safely and efficiently, every day, every hour, and every minute.
  • We know the world is changing quickly because of new rules and advancing technology. This means the role of electricity is changing, bringing new challenges and opportunities.
  • Our goal is to build, maintain and improve the electricity network to meet the changing needs of people today and in the future.
  • Understanding weather’s impact on energy generation and consumption is vital for ESB Networks to effectively build and improve the electricity network. The data collected by the school weather stations through the Weather Watch program can provide valuable insights into local weather patterns.

  • We want to help create a clean electric future, with our customers at the centre of this change.
  • This information can help ESB Networks plan for infrastructure development, optimize energy storage solutions, and manage the grid more efficiently, especially with the increasing reliance on weather-dependent renewable energy sources.

Connecting Ireland’s electricity network

  • The Weather Watch program engages students and, by extension, their families and communities in conversations about energy and sustainability. This aligns with ESB Networks’ goal of putting customers at the center of the change towards a clean electric future.
  • By raising awareness and promoting energy literacy, the program encourages responsible energy consumption habits and empowers individuals to make conscious choices that support a sustainable energy future.
  • ESB Networks has over 3,000 employees all over the country. We build and run the medium and low voltage electricity systems, including power stations, overhead lines, poles, and underground cables.
  • We always put our customers first, no matter which electricity supplier they use.

  • Our work is funded by ‘use of system’ charges that are billed to every customer by their electricity suppliers. These charges are checked by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU).
  • Supporting competitive electricity markets – We operate, install, maintain and read meters for our expansive customer base. Over 1.9m smart meters are now remotely read daily. Standard meters are read up to four times a year.
  • Powering the future – We’re committed to a lower carbon energy future powered by renewable sources, such as wind farms.
